{"id":985,"date":"2024-10-29T13:19:14","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T17:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.highheeledsuccess.com\/?p=985"},"modified":"2024-10-29T13:19:14","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T17:19:14","slug":"strategies-for-coping-with-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.highheeledsuccess.com\/?p=985","title":{"rendered":"Strategies for Coping with Failure"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.highheeledsuccess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/success-failure.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-986 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.highheeledsuccess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/success-failure.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.highheeledsuccess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/success-failure.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.highheeledsuccess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/success-failure-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.highheeledsuccess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/success-failure-768x496.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Fall is not just about falling leaves.\u00a0 We are talking about the big falls in a career.\u00a0 It happens to everyone at some time in your career, you have experienced a failure.\u00a0 How you manage the situation will depend on your personality but even more importantly on what you learn to do in that situation.\u00a0 You got fired from your job, you did not get promoted, your proposal was rejected, your presentation bombed, or you received a terrible annual review \u2014 you fill in the blank.\u00a0 I rail against those that say there is no such thing as failure, it is just a word.\u00a0 Tell that to someone who has just had one of the above experiences, it really feels like failure to them!\u00a0 Even more importantly, to discount their experience compounds the problem.\u00a0 The first step in bouncing back, picking oneself up and moving forward, is to say the words \u201cI failed\u201d aloud.\u00a0 The more we try to push it down, the higher the risk.\u00a0 What is the risk?\u00a0 Labeling oneself as a failure.\u00a0 Having failed and being a failure are vastly different.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>People fail numerous times every day, which is just a part of life and a career.\u00a0 The more we try to hide our failures, the more internalized it becomes.\u00a0 I remember presenting a terrible workshop a decade ago.\u00a0 I had a two-hour drive back home afterwards.\u00a0 The more I hashed it over in my mind, the more the failure stung.\u00a0 It was not until I called a colleague on that drive back that the sting began to lessen a bit.\u00a0 I am not a mind reader, but I can predict that you will have failures in your career.\u00a0 Check out the recent cover song by Kelly Clarkson of Frank Sinatra\u2019s classic \u201cThat\u2019s Life.\u201d\u00a0 The words are, \u201cYou\u2019re riding high in April shot down in May, but I know I\u2019m gonna change that tune, when I\u2019m back on top in June.\u00a0 Each time I find myself flat on my face I pick myself up and get back in the race.\u201d\u00a0 Be ready, know the steps to take, plan now and getting back in the race will be far easier.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Allow yourself to grieve:\u00a0 Failure hurts, it can be embarrassing and humiliating. You have experienced a loss, allow yourself to experience your emotions.\u00a0 Identify your feelings, name them.\u00a0 Allow yourself to cry, feel sad, and get angry.\u00a0 Whatever your feelings, honor them.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Know what you did, or did not, do:\u00a0 One of the comments I sometimes hear from clients is, \u201cI don\u2019t know how this happened.\u201d\u00a0 Are you sure about that?\u00a0 Sometimes the initial humiliation is so intense that we cannot bring ourselves to acknowledge what happened.\u00a0 As soon as possible, start identifying what really happened.\u00a0 What part of this failure do you own?\u00a0 Ask yourself:\u00a0 Did I give it an earnest effort?\u00a0 Did I really understand my audience?\u00a0 Did I do my part in self-promotion to allow my boss to know my value?\u00a0 Was I willing to adapt my leadership style?\u00a0 Was I an effective team member?\u00a0 If there are factors outside of your control, acknowledge them as well.\u00a0 Resist taking responsibility for circumstances that you had no way of seeing coming.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>\u00a0Find your grief team: Who are your perfect supporters?\u00a0 At various times of working your way through this failed attempt, you will need different support.\u00a0 In the beginning, supporters who listen, offer empathy, affirm your feelings, and allow you space to express are key.\u00a0 There is nothing that feels less valuable than a big dose of positivity at this stage, there will be time for that later.\u00a0 I often call these people my grieving partners.\u00a0 They can tolerate tears, silence, and intense emotions.\u00a0 Not everyone in your circle can do this.\u00a0 It takes special people to \u201chold your hand and heart\u201d in the grieving process.\u00a0 Keep in mind that having failed at something can feel like a career death.\u00a0 Work is a significant part of your life and identity.\u00a0 Allow yourself the time and space for acknowledging workplace failures.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Find your cheerleading team:\u00a0 The next people that can serve you well are your encouraging cheerleaders.\u00a0 Identify the people that convince you that you have it in you to bounce back.
